Post-dizziness from Hoobastank Concert
it's all a blur now... i'm still imagining myself at Siloso Beach man... maybe it's a little overrated to say it was the best concert of my 18 years so far, considering it's my first ever rock concert i've been to. but it was soooo worth it.
firstly, i managed to get the tickets from my sister's tutor at $20. what a bargain... my sister suprised me with them. she couldn't tag along though; my mom thought it'd be pretty risky. (just a little background for those who still don't know.. those who do.. just read on..:-P) so there i had 3 tickets... i asked around... some were broke or weren't allowed to... *SOBS*... then a friend from my malay dance club agreed to tag along. so one more ticket... then she managed to get a football player from our school to nab it. (it's khai in case you guys are wondering who). well, so we met up at JE interchange at 4 p.m. all excited and nearly peeing in our pants. haha... this sounds really stupid right? when we reached Harbour Front MRT we ran into a senior with his bassist. you see, he's the frontman for this band, Scream Front. both of them were going to the concert too. so we gave khai his ticket, and went with our senior - Faizal - instead (i mean since we knew him FAR better). so it was me, Fadhillah, Faizal, his bassist Joe, and another girl Hafhizah (no, she wasn't a girlfriend to any of them).
obviously Faizal has a friend working at Sentosa, and she had her car parked there. so we agreed to park our bags in her car and just bring along our valuables. then we headed to Siloso Beach with the shuttle bus. when we arrived, a huge area, about the size of a football field, had been cordoned off with white tents for the concert... the stage was like 1.7m above the ground.
after going to the loo for last-minute peeing time (haha), we went in. at that time it was about 6 p.m. me and Fadhillah had those tickets from my sister, so we were put at the back, but we were like the second row from the barricades, so it wasn't so bad. Faizal and his two buddies bought the $79 tickets, so they got in front. from the last person in the front portion to the first person from behind the barricades, was like a good 50m apart... damn it! the worse part is that, by 7 p.m. the front portion wasn't even half full! i sensed that the turn-out wasn't going to be good. even the back wasn't filling up too fast. so there was supposed to be two opening acts (which i can frankly say, pretty much sucked. they tried to be entertaining, but were just boring the crowd to death). i even forgot what their names were!
time passed... 7.15...7.30...7.45...8.00...8.20...8.30... what the hell?!! the second band practically played almost an entire album of songs...7 frigging songs! i couldn't feel my legs. 8.40 p.m and they said it was time for Hoobastank to come out... 2-3 minutes maximum time to wait.... 2 minutes passed, 4 minutes passed. then 5 minutes, 6, 7... what the FUCK?!! then it started... OMG. total exhiliration!!! the first song just happened to be the one that i'm playing on my blog now... my new fave hoobastank song.. hee~.
after their first song "Out of Control", Doug (the lead singer) said that he didn't feel connected with the back audience, and we all screamed in agreement. people (er, including me) started chanting "BREAK DOWN THE GATES! BRING DOWN THE GATES!" he said "well, they don't look very high for you guys to climb over." he didn't realise that for some of us (or most actually) the barricades came up to our armpits, or even chin. what we can we do.. poor short Asian people. then more rocking tunes were played, and Doug's shirt was slowly coming off... Eeee! he has a killer bod, hot and sweltering... Fadhillah even started screaming "TAKE OFF YOUR PANTS!!"
here and there, Doug managed to remember us poor, cooped up monkeys behind barricades by saying "How are you guys at the back? How are the gates doing?" of course hinting to us that we should just fuck the security rules and jump over. halfway through the concert, 2 guys from our back crowd had enough guts to jump over... but were pulled out by security. luckily they let them in again. then when they played "The Reason"... the crowd went wild (which is ironic, since the song is not like a rock number or something) and every single person was singing along... it felt magical. there was one part of the concert where Doug said "We love you guys man. You're doing an excellent job. Tonight you gotta let go of everything. I don't get this arrangement. There's gotta be a way. For you guys at the back, for once do what you gotta do to come down here, and get your fucking asses down here!" we roared back in enthusiasm. there was alot of moshing (that means grinding bodies, and shared sweat.. hehe) going on and people were jumping up and down as though the ground was laid out with a trampoline.
it was getting to the end of the concert, with "Crawling In the Dark"... *SOBS*... and Doug announced "if you guys at the back want to forget about rules, trash it out... this is the time to do it!" towards the end of the song, there were more daring people in our back crowd who were egging the rest to jump over the barricades. then Doug made one last announcement "there are more of you than there is of them..." that's when about 4 or 5 people jumped over, and slowly the rest pushed their way through the barricades. a big-sized security guy was trying his best to push the barricades back in... and frankly, i was a little scared that i might not make it through. about 6 to 7 security guys were lined up in front of us ready to pounce on any "escaped prisoner". then some kind soul came back to force another barricade open... it started to look like all the animals were released from Mandai Zoo... i was frantically searching for Fadhillah, thank God she wore a shiny sequined top, and i managed to spot her. suddenly, i felt someone tug at my shirt pulling me back ( i was "SHIT! i'm not going to make it!") and i screamed "Fadhillah! Go Fadhillah! GO!" then i forced my way out of the person's grasp and ran for my life to join her. i was wearing slippers and i nearly lost them in the sand as i was running, but i told myself "Wani, whatever it is, don't look back!" so i managed to catch up with Fadhillah. and we joined the entire group of moshing people in front... the band was like "YEA! Let yourselves go!!" it started getting a little violent and rough in front though. a few guys started to throw themselves into the sea of people and expected to be carried above their heads (aka body surfing). this irritating fella had his feet banging on my head constantly, and me, being so small, was nearly crushed under his weight.
then this crazy dude started dancing in a circular motion, so he used the surrounding people as walls to help him keep in motion and keep stable. by this time, me and Fadhillah were grabbing onto each other so that the combination of our weights could withstand this dude's own weight and force. it was really hard to breathe and we were practically showering in our pespiration as well as other poeple's (including this one big-sized guy who was topless!) then the band started throwing about three or four of their drumsticks into the crowd... i wanted one... but too bad. then Fadhillah thought it was time to go, and i agreed. we met up with Faizal and his two friends at the side. and guess what? his friend Hafhizah managed to get one of their drumsticks!! it was autographed, used (from all the scratches and dents) and had the Hoobastank logo... man... she told us she had to fight with all the guys around her to grab it. she was the only girl among all these "hungry" males, and she was pretty intimidated. but i think they let her have it because she IS a girl.. hee~. now she's holding onto that stick like it is her LIFE.. haha, i would too! outside the tents, me and Fadhillah were talking loudly about the concert and the last part where the barricades were broken. an aussie guy happened to overhear our conversation and said 'it's not funny girls, let me tell you." he was limping in his right ankle pretty badly, and told us what happened. obviously he was trying to get some booze for some girls inside, and went out to get it. on his way back, i think he was chased or something and ran into a ditch. OUCH! poor thing, and worst part is that he came alone. then, we walked back to the shuttle bus station to go back to the car and get our bags... and were talking about our own experiences - how it's like at the back and the front. Faizal kept rubbing it in that our tickets were so cheap, that's why we didn't get the full satisfaction. dumb arse... ^_^
at the car, we all took a picture with the one, valuable drumstick... everyone wanted to hold it, haha! we were saying "eh, if you sell on eBay... i'm sure you can make lots of money"... Hafhizah was like "No way!" so we headed back to Harbour Front MRT, Faizal bought lime juice for everyone and we took 188. i dropped down near IMM, and took a cab the rest of the way home. reached home at midnight, with a hoarse throat, beautiful memories, and the satisfaction that i went against authority in public for once. even if i wasn't the one who started it.
Doug has a VERY, VERY sexy body, Dan has a killer mohawk and broody looks which are to die for! Markku looks cute with his power bass! Aww, and Chris was already topless from the beginning of the concert... rockin' drumming! Hoobastank truly rocks man!!! WOO-HOO!!!
