The signal is subtle
We pass just close enough to touch
No questions, no answers
We know by now to say enough
With only simple words
With only subtle turns
The things we feel alone for one another
There is a secret that we keep
I won't sleep if you won't sleep
Because tonight may be the last chance we'll be given
We are compelled to do what we must do
We are compelled to do what we have been forbidden
So I won't sleep if you won't sleep tonight

(500) Days of Summer
this is not your typical, mushy, "isn't-love-grand" love story. in fact, this will probably hit home for almost anyone who's been a "dumper" or a "dumpee". HAH.
levitt and deschanel play tom and summer, who meet under very normal circumstances, but whose little journey of discovery is quite the emotional roller coaster. summer makes it clear from the start they what they have has to be "casual" because she's not in it for a serious relationship. of course, tom, being the hopeless romantic, fakes his willingness to agree, and eventually falls in love with summer.
the absolute greatest thing about this movie is that it's not just a romantic-comedy. it actually reflects real life. the agony of not knowing what you two really are (dating, a couple, open relationship?) and the eventual heartbreak of so many couples we know. and the fact that the timeline of the show is not linear, in that it fast forwards as well as reverses in time, makes the intended audience just as much a part of tom and summer's journey as the two of them are.
the chemistry the two leads display on-screen is, to say the least, electric. yes, they have their awkward moments as all new couples do, but they play off each other's insecurities so well, it's almost like they're meant for each other. but alas, like i said, it's not really a love story. i'm not going to spoil the plot any further, but i will leave you with this.
this movie is a perfect first date movie, without any of that uneasy "heavily emotional" scenes or awkward silences. i can assure you and your date (or friends) will be kept highly entertained and share a few good laughs just revelling in one of life's greatest mysteries called Love.
4 out of 5. :) p.s. i'd like to think that i'm sort of going through what tom and summer were going through. and in a weird way, it's so exciting! ;)
